Keeping my fingers crossed about getting a volunteer position at the Oregon Historical Society's research library. According to the volunteer coordinator, the head librarian likes to give a leg up to MLIS students. This would be awesome for two primary reasons:

1) It's practical experience, thus hopefully making the $40,000 debt I'm accruing to get a professional degree more likely to result in a job.

2) Because Rachel : college as fish : water, I'm thinking about getting a Masters in History IF i can get a fellowship that would pay for it. PSU offers a History fellowship through the OHS, and this would give me an excellent in.

Don't you just love how even volunteer positions are battled over nowadays?

This sounds like just the kind of volunteer job I'd salivate over. I volunteered at the San Diego Historical Society for a while processing their big ol' archive and it was luverly. I have considered getting my Master's in history as well to complement ye olde MLS so that I'm more likely to be a candidate as an archivist...not sure yet.

Yeah, that's my thinking exactly. Or if not in archives, then at least as a subject-specialist.
